What is Taoism?
Taoism (Daoism) refers to a variety of related philosophical and religious traditions and concepts that have influenced China and Asia for over two millennia and the West for over two hundred years. The word "tao" , means "path" or "way". Taoist thought generally focuses on nature, health, longevity, and the concepts of wu wei (action through inaction), wu xing (the five phases), the theory of yin and yang and the yi jing/ba gua.
In these Qi Gong classes, there is not a focus on religious Taoism. The focus here is on living your life in the fullest, healthiest and most insightful way possible. The methods taught in class at White Crane can be grouped into three categories:
Taoist Natural & Medical Theory
Use of Herbs in Daily Life
Seasonal Qi Gong
Each class is taught based on all three of these categories. For example, in the spring we should try and harmonize the liver and spleen (theory). So, we drink a herbal tea, take herbal capsules, and/or cook with Chinese herbs in our food to help harmonize these two organs (use of herbs). We should also use specific Qi Gong exercises to treat these organs and balance them with the natural order of our environment (seasonal qi gong).
Classes are held every Thursday evening in Ingersoll.
